What You’ll Find in Our Ford MPG Guides
Of course, you’ll find the MPG ratings for some of the most popular Ford models, but you’ll also find in-depth information about what’s behind that great fuel economy.
A fuel-efficient performance starts with the engine. That’s why you’ll find information on engine power and capability. Plus, you can also learn more about the transmission that it’s paired up with. That’s because the transmission harnesses the engine’s power, ensuring that it doesn’t have to work as hard to keep you going.
Here’s a closer look at some of the things that make Ford cars so efficient.
The transmission is the part of your vehicle that transfers engine power to the wheels. A capable, top-notch transmission ensures that your vehicle is in the right gear at the right time, so your engine won’t have to work as hard to power your Ford. That’s why a transmission that’s specially designed to work with your vehicle can help increase your Ford MPG.
The Ford lineup has several unique transmissions that can help optimize fuel economy. The first is the PowerShift 6-Speed Automatic Transmission, which is available on the Ford Fiesta. It uses dual-clutch technology to provide virtually seamless shifting and continuous torque. So, less engine power and fuel will be needed to keep your car moving at the right speed.
There’s also the TorqShift® Heavy-Duty 6-speed SelectShift-G™ Automatic transmission, standard on the Ford Super Duty. It’s specially designed to work with the powerful Ford pickups. It’s equipped with a unique torque converter, which locks at lower speeds. That means, the engine won’t have to burn a ton of fuel when towing a big haul.
Boosting Ford MPG with Advanced Engines
The engine, of course, plays a critical role in determining fuel efficiency. That’s why Ford created an exclusive engine that fine-tunes power output while also sipping fuel. It’s called the EcoBoost® engine, but how does it work?
Some variation of this engine is available on almost all Ford vehicles. It uses three specialized mechanisms to increase efficiency. The first is Twin-independent Variable Cam Timing or Ti-VCT. It precisely opens and closes the engine valves to increase or decrease power and limit fuel consumption at a moment’s notice.
On top of that, the EcoBoost® engine recycles exhaust fumes and uses them to turn a turbine. This provides turbocharged power with very little fuel consumption. Finally, there’s the direct injection technology, which delivers a fine mist of fuel into the combustion chamber. It maximizes power and maintains the MPG rating of your Ford.
The Efficiency of Diesel
If you’re looking to get more miles per gallon out of your brawny Ford pickup, you may want to upgrade to a diesel engine. The Ford F-150 and Ford Super Duty pickups have two different diesel options. They are:
- 3.0L Power Stroke® Turbo Diesel V6
- 6.7L Power Stroke® Turbo Diesel V8
Whichever diesel system you choose, it’s bound to give you increased fuel economy. If you’d like to know why, we’re here to tell you how they work.
It all starts with the diesel fuel itself. It’s more energy-dense than traditional gasoline. That’s because, on a molecular level, it’s comprised of almost 15 percent more long-chain hydrocarbons. To burn this energy-rich fuel, the engine needs to use a higher compression ratio. Gasoline engines are usually maxed out at a 12-to-1 compression ratio. Diesel systems, however, start at 12 and can reach 16-to-1 or more!
What kind of effect does this have on your Ford MPG rating? During combustion, the cylinders of a diesel engine are superheated. When the fuel is injected into the combustion chambers it instantly ignites. That makes it much easier for these systems to extract power from the diesel fuel. That increases your power output and optimizes fuel economy.
