Historical Theatre Undergoing a Full Restoration

The Historic Embassy Theatre opened in 1927 and was once a lively motion picture/vaudeville theatre, running during the “golden era” of movie palaces of the 1920s. Its entire exterior and interior were designed to convey a “Broadway picture palace” experience. Plus, it was the culture center of Lewistown for many years, showcasing many films, stage acts, bands, and local talent to the residents of the area.

The theatre closed in 1981, but is currently undergoing a massive restoration by a non-profit organization named The Friends of the Embassy Theatre. Their plan is to completely renovate the theatre to be used for live music and comedy performances, screenings of independent and classic films, and even social events and wedding receptions.

Blending Lewistown’s Past, Present & Future

The Mifflin County Historical Society was founded in 1921 to record and preserve the area’s history and relate it to present-day events and places.

The volunteer members work hard to keep the society’s initial goal alive today: They assist in the society’s office and library, located in the old courthouse; they conduct tours of the McCoy House Museum; they host special trips and programs throughout the year for any interested resident; plus, they have many publications about the area’s history that are for sale in person or online.

Check out the Mifflin County Historical Society Facebook page for more information on the library and museum.
